Does decorating really matter? This is a question that’s been on my mind a lot lately. And after much thought I’ve decided the answer is yes! It absolutely does matter. Let me tell you why I think this is true.
Our homes are our nests or our havens. For me, home has always been my favorite place to be. It’s our little corner of the world.
So many memories are made at home. Think about all the time you’ve spent at your dining room table, maybe celebrating birthdays or just sharing a meal with friends. For us, the kitchen is a spot we spend a lot of time in together so this area was a top priority when we moved in.
We spend so much time at home and so many important things happen at home. So why wouldn’t we want to surround ourselves with things we find beautiful? When you feel connected to some of the things you’re surrounded by, like a painting that reminds you of a certain place, or something that you brought home from a vacation, or something that just makes you happy, that’s what makes a place feel like home.
I totally believe that our surroundings affect our moods and our day-to-day lives. And if our homes make us happy we’ll be happier in general.
So how do you get that happy-with-your-home feeling? It doesn’t always require a total room makeover. These are some of things that have helped me…
- If you find something that inspires you…buy it! Don’t think about it, just do it. Sometimes I think that’s one of the things that messes us up the most. We don’t trust our instincts. Don’t obsess over it, if you love it buy it. I promise when you start doing this you’ll learn to trust your decorating instincts more.
- When choosing something new for your home, like a piece of furniture or new bedding, choose it because YOU love it. Don’t worry about what your second cousin’s best friend thinks about it. This is another way people get hung up. I see this all the time at work. Decorate for yourself, not for others.
- It doesn’t have to be the newest, most expensive, trend-of-the-moment. I think the most interesting homes are the ones that are filled with things that have been collected over time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about working some trends into my home. But I also like to mix in some classic pieces, and many of them I’ve had for years.
- Fresh flowers! This is one of my favorites. It’s such a small thing that makes a big impact on the way I feel. I absolutely love fresh flowers and I always buy the inexpensive ones from the grocery store. Using several flowers in one single color, cut short and popped into a squaty vase, always looks great.
As a blogger it sometimes seems self-indulgent to share pictures of our home or things I’ve bought for our home. But believe me when I say it’s much more than that. It’s a way for me to share the things I get so excited about with people that share my love of decor, and the ways I’m trying to make our home a place we love to be. And I hope that it inspires you to do the same.
When your home reflects your style and the lives of those that live there, it will serve you and your family well. So while it may not be something that changes the world I do believe that decorating matters. I believe it can be meaningful and that you have the ability to make your little corner of the world a happy and beautiful place.
Do you agree? I would love your thoughts on this one.
